Like the beginning of the series, old.
In issue #2, they go after the Vanisher. Who, really, isn’t even that bad of a guy. He has a super teleportation ability and he’s definitely a criminal. But the most evil thing he can think to do with it is rob banks. And he does it politely. Just goes in, asks for money, and teleports away. Not a criminal mastermind, is my point. And how does Professor X deal with him? By wiping his damn memory. He effectively kills the guy for robbing a few small banks.
In issue #3, they meet the Blob for the first time. They bring him to Xavier’s school and offer him a place on the team. When Blob refuses, Xavier tells him that no one has ever refused the offer and that he isn’t allowed to leave. There’s a big fight as they try to prevent their hostage from going back home and for some reason, we’re supposed to cheer on the X-Men.
Also, during all of this, Chuck is nursing a super crush on Jean Grey who is, at this point, his student and a young teenager. He’s super protective of her, touches her whenever he can find an excuse, and calls her “dear.”
Charles Xavier is the worst. I think we all knew that, but I think it bears clarifying occasionally.
Also, it occurs to me as I write this, that I really want to throw this in the face of people who pine for the “morality” of days gone by. Fuck you and your nostalgia goggles. This is the morality that popular culture was teaching kids back then? I’ll keep my PC leftist hippie bullshit, thank you very much.
